721 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  EZ_E XC
i have '87 skidoo mx, it sat for a while, then i cleaned the carbs. Now it runs fine, but it tops out at 30 mph. i know this should go a bit faster.
Any idea why it won't go?
The brake is not grabbing
It will only rev to 5500 rpm

It should def go much faster than 5500 rpm and 30mph. Sounds like the belt could be slipping, try taking it off and putting on a new one and see if she goes any better. good luck
Does it rev any higher with the track in the air? Try this... lift up the back end and open the throttle, when it gets to 5500 can you give it a shot of primer and see if it revs higher or dies out. What condition are the spark plugs? Pull them out and see if they are dry or wet.

Since it has sat for a while this could also be other problems. With the sled in the air can you pull the track through by hand? if not could be seized boggy bearings or possibly something in the chaincase not lubed. How about the jackshaft bearing. If it does pull through smoothly with a little effort it could be your clutch setup. may just need a good cleaning too.

thanks guy i haven't checked a whole lot with it yet, so i shall try these suggestions.
Anymore??
No more suggestions until we get the spark plug condition. It really tells us what is happening with the fuel/air ratio being delivered to the motor. From there we'll be able to better diagnose what is happening. right now there are too many factors in different area. Keep us posted!

It's your clutch, stop what you are doing and get it serviced, I have had the same problem twice and each time it was the clutch.

He who loves not his country can love nothing
if it is none of these problems then possibly just maybe u could of messed up the throttle cable adjustmentwhile cleaning the carbs and maybe the slides on u'r carbs aren't opening all the way.....just an idea
