I've been having a lot of trouble with my mach fouling plugs right after i start it so i decided to tear it down tonight. One of the center seals are blown and is dumping oil into the mag side. I'm caught between rebuilding this one wich pulls really well or buying a '95 583 that i found. My question is, which motor is better?

617 all the way...also better than a 670. Don't waste time on the 583 if you still want "easily-over-100-everyday-power"! My 617 (main sled) has over 4500 mi on it and still turns 115 to 120 regularly!! The 583, althought rated for aircraft, can't give you that power!

Both my brother inlaws have these motors - The 617 is a far stronger motor....He can take a 98 MXz670, a Yamaha 700 Tripple (only for a while, 700 wins on the lake)... 617 1.25 paddle track, 670 190 some studs, 700 OEM track.....

The 617 mtor is a 583 just with a longer stroke and bored over more. You can change cranks in a 583 and bore (I think it was 30 over) to get 617. There is a site somewhere on doing it. It is just like Black Magic's stealth kit. You can also do the same thing with Cats. A 550 to 580 all you have to do is bore over and change pistons. It uses the same crank. You can turn a 550 or 580 into a 625 if you have the time and cash.
