The 700 XCR gets Variable Exhaust Valves and flat-slide carbs. There's probably other little things too, maybe NiCasil lined cylinders....i dunno.

Only the '99 XCR 700 had the flatslides and VES. The '98's did not. The only other difference other than cc's looks to be the weight. Xcr700 about 12lbs. heavier.

you can actually run into this alot where older sleds can have more hp. it mostly because of fuel. plus you have to look at the years they are comparing.

The second link is incorrect in lisying rge XCR 700 as a 2 cylinder.

The 97 and 98 Ultra, Ultra SPX and XCR 700 are the same motor. 679 cc's. They are identical even thought in 98 they list it as a 700, it is not. The 99 XCR 700 is just under 700 cc's and has variable exhaust. The bore on the 97 and 98 motor is 66.6 mm where the 99 motor is 67.6 mm. The 680 triple/triple put out about 128 hp on a good day. The 700 VES triple/triple put out about 135 hp. The power band on the VES motor has a stronger pull througout the range and will beat a 680 cc motor, being stock for stock. 99 was the only year for the 700 VES triple. Nice sled for high speed cruising, but heavy.
