sounds like the pick up tube has come off inside the tank. Its a crazy job of getting it out of the tank, but it can be done with some patience and a coat hanger. Once its out take the fitting of of the front of the tank and feed it back in, tighten and enjoy. too make sure its off, you can usually shine a mag light in the tank hole and just barely see the fitting at the front of the tank, or just lift up the front of the sled and take the fitting out to see if it is connected. Let us know how it works out.
If its still connected, then my second guess would be the fuel pump.
I'm going to agree with trailjunkie, my 91 Indy Trail did the same thing and it was the pick up line inside of the tank, Mine was rotten and had to be replaced, May be in your best interest to just replace it also, instead of just reattaching it.
