Technology!! The 550 is a piston port engine. The fuel enters the cylinder via ports from the cylinder jug directly from the carbs. The 500 is a case reed engine. The fuel mixture enters the engine through the reeds and into the crankcase. The fuel then goes into the cylinder through the transfer ports in the jug. Without writing a small novel, case reed engines put out more power through a better design in fuel/air delivery than piston port engines. Only a few engines are piston port today.
yea but theres alot to be said good about piston port engines, i bought a old vespa scooter thats been in a barn for 20+ years, after a good carb rebuild, and a fuel tank cleaning it fired right up and runs like a top, now i know the new technology is great for adding HP, but we will see how they will stand the test of time.
