What is the proper procedure for cleanig my VES on my 2000 500 XC SP. I want to make sire that I am going to get the best performance out of my sled. It is probly over due it has 1100 miles on it and it hasn't been due yet. I don't think it should be to bad since I have on used synthetic oil. I plan on talking to the mechanic at the dealership but if youcould give some insight on it before I talk to him I would appreciate it.

A friend of mine has a 2000 XC 500 SP and to clean the valves on it we just unbolt them where they attatch to the engine (2 bolts) and slide them out, then scratch all the carbon from them using carb cleaner and steel wool or a knife. Just be careful to not scratch up the valve.

My 440 has the VES, and i always replace the gaskets every cleaning. They sometimes peel when i pull the valves off. Also, make certain to read the writing on the valve that says (TOP), just to make sure they don't go in upside down.
What year is your 440?

The 1997 &1998 440 valves are different than the 2000 valves. On my 440 (1998) I haven't replaced the gasket yet and it doesn't leak, or peel.

Plus the new valves don't have the word "top" engraved in the metal. Just be sure to remember which end is up.

Polarisman, i see you have the same sled as i (1998 XCR 440 ). FUN SLED!! I only peeled my gaskets once, so i guess i have always replaced them everytime for assurance. I probably don't need to, but they are cheep. When you go to the dealer for parts and they ask what your sled is, why is it that they consider this sled an (SP) when it is not on the hood??? They told me that if it is a red 1998, then it is the (SP). NICE PICS! I seen yours, but where is the letters XC-10 on your front trailling arms???
Thanks to you all. I think I will pick up a set of gaskets when I go to the dealer just to be safe. I hope that paying 27 dollars per gallon for the sythetic oil hased payed off. I will find out this weekend. Once agian thanks.
My trailing arms say IFS Xtra on them. Not XC-10.

It is the XC-10 Front suspension though.
