what is the correct belt adjustment for 97 indy xlt 600 and how to adjust anybody know thanks

Three bolts on the front of the secondary clutch with a gold plate. Loosen the bolts a bit and then rotate the plate then tighten and check. One way opens the clutch sheaves (loosens belt) the other closes clutch sheaves ( tightens belt). Adjust with your sled on the ground and your belt should just be on the edge of squealing but not too much.

is there a good starting point as far as distance between primary and secondary or deflection in" on belt or just trial and error thank man this site kicks a$$[thumb]

distance between prim. and sec. can't be changed. You want the belt to ride 'up' on the secondary clutch by about 5mm give or take. Any more and your belt will likely squeal and the sled will creep ahead a bit when you leave it idling. Go with that.
