I missed the auction, but I am sure it was bogus. There once was a bogus auction on ebay, where the "seller" used photos of an ATV belonging to a member of an ATV forum I visit. Obviously we all knew it was bogus. So we all went in and bid the thing up. I forget the maximum bid ebay allows. Something like a million bucks. This way no one would get screwed thinking it was legit. But this is the very reason you see a lot of auctions saying that a bidder has to be approved first. If you have to get permission from the seller to bid, chances are it is bogus.
