well, first of all, you must be pretty experienced at some of these things before you can do anything that will help and not hurt your engine, but- you can port and polish your cylinder, scrap your airbox, put dual carbs on, tune the carbs, hollow out your exhaust pipe, get high perf. spark plugs....and don't do any of these things unless you know what you are doing.....because you can mess up your engine seriously if you dont do it right.!
ya i can have all that done but first off no air box so that one wont work but id probally get my buddy to port the carb and it has dual carbs on it already so

there ya go port the carb thats a good start.
hahah
Guys lay off. There's not much you can do to something that old without extensive engine mods that firepower14 mentioned. Id say change your chaincase gears to a smaller size, maybe a tooth smaller on the top and two teeth on the bottom. That would increase acceleration dramatically but it also lowers top speed 60-70 tops if that, but with that setup you would have your skis in the air the whole time........well as much as a 400 cc engine built in 1974 could (VERY LITTLE sorry im not bashing the age of the sled just the brand) lmao good luck
well as it is i cannot raise the skis the clutch has been changed from the stock to a p-85

just changing the clutch wont do anything. im assuming you probably had the arctic hex clutch before? that clutch is perfectly capable of being tuned for better performance providing its in good working condition. and technically a snowmbile is not suposed to "raise the skis" that just means you have too much weight transfer for anything but a drag race.
im just looking for more speed i need to go faster!

I hate to be the one to say it...but you have a 1970's product. Even though it's a 400 it's a 1970's 400 (read as: slow and underpowered). Something that is almost 40 years old!

Get another sled. Your just not going to find what you are looking for in this sled.

Not sure why you would spend up to $900 on NOS, for an almost 40 year old sled...but to each their own.

If you want more speed, get some new gears. Your going to loose a lot of your bottom end though.

he asked, I replied

It would more than likely blow up, then get a sled worth putting $$$$ into......if there is such a thing
i want to race the old sled not performance

would racing not require some degree of performance?

your going to be at a disadvantage becuase you have a 400 and the only class you will be able to run in is the 440 class so your giving up 40 cc's to the competition. that could be as much as 10 HP. i belive it would be possible to get a complete 440 top end and put it on that crank case as long as its a T7 base. is that engine quad plug?

overall a 74 eltigre 400 is not a good choice for racing what form of racing were you planning on doing anyway? those old cats are slow and they have heavy steel skid frame suspensions.

so unless your willing to send your entire motor to an engine shop and have them mod it and build pipes for it there is not much you can do. another option would be to get your self a 75 cat Z 440 motor (T7C440FR2A) it will be expensive if you can find one and you will need pipes for it but its an option. I have a feeling your way out of your league here though.

if your not going to get a proper set of twin pipes for it you will have no chance at winning. clutched to engage and max out at what rpm's
2Cyl ya say thanks for clearing that up.

like i said you need a 440 motor piped and twin 38's at least to make any power. FR2 Z motor prefered.
