I'm looking to by a clean 1996 sls500 for $1200.00.Please let me know your thoughts about reliability, speed, etc.

for a 1996 500sls, I would offer more along the lines of 1000.00 tops! as for top speed I'd say 75 to 85 on the dream-o-meter, maybe a little more depends on how much the rider weights.

SL or SLE ( touring model ) is 503 fanner, but SLS is L/C model replacing MX's ( 95 last year for MX's )

I agree, the sls is a 500 liquid cooled. The machine has a good kick to it and should run up in the 80 mph range. If it is very clean and with lower miles I'd jump at it for 1200. Look for a rippled runner board where the foot well connects, the S2000 chassis were weak in this area.
