Ok,i am installing a 136" track on my 500 XC.I want to install a 17 tooth top gear and a 40 tooth bottom gear.Can i use the stock 74 chain or what chain do i need?How many teeth can you drop from stock and use the stock chain?Also what is the max number of teeth you can drop on only the top gear?Any info is greatly appreciated. Trav

You will need a 72 pitch chain. That combination will work fine for the application you are running.
It will give you a ratio of (2.29).
If you want to keep the 74 pitch chain the smallest top gear you can use is a 19 (2.11 ratio) but it is not recommended as it uses to much of the tensioner travel.
A 20 tooth gear would also work, (2.00 ratio) and is OK on the recommended gearing chart for a 74 pitch chain.
