HELP! Sleds Runs but no Electrics

3129 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  wacky_woodchuck
Ok on our 2001 Polaris XC500 Edge (non-valves), we started it up tonight, the thing ran great, all lights and guages. Then pop, nothing! The lights work very very dim, but no guages, no tail lights no nothing (electrical)....But she stills runs! Runs like a champ, with no lights though. Does anyone know of what it could be? Where could I look? The sled only has 500miles on it, and hopefully it's not the stator... Please not the stator. And she's just out of warranty by a month too! Arrrgghhhh.....

Sounds like lighting coil decided to die.

You should still get warranty on that though.

Hey thanks man. After looking at some schemaics that we had here, we kinda thought it was the lighting coil. Hopefully we can get it fixed ASAP, as we finally got some snow to ride again, and we have a big club ride coming up on Saturday night... Arrgghhh.... Still pisses me off though.

So the light was very very dim? Hmm, try what Polaris-Man said. I know what problems are like, I hate them.

Ok, im not really into the electronics part of sleds (mainly cuz i cant get any wiring diagrams), but i do get into the electronics in automobiles quite a bit...and i swear that i seen a fuse in my Indy triumph. Maybe im just dreaming, but if there is a fuse, that would be where i look first.

Polaris is my way out - Other people just use a door.
Naa... no fuse, if there was there would be no electrics at all. I still have some, but the lights are very very dim. Kinda like when a flashlight dies because of weak batteries. The headlights light up, but very faintly, a dull orange color, only seen in pitch black. And all other guages, idiot lights, tail lights are out. Gonna talk with a local shop and see what they can do today.

Thanks for all your help guys.... I practically tore that thing apart, taking apart wiring looms looking for a rub, or anything. Atleast the Polaris Edge's are easy to work on. Everything was plain as day, and nothing, well not much was tough to find. Thanks to polaris online part manual. The entire parts fiche was on Polaris website! Now that was a life safer.

id check to see if you may have a bad ground it sounds like it to me from the dim lights you describe, i had just the oppsite problem my sled the lights were to bright burning out bulbs, it was the regulator, wiring problems are a pain but try to find a wiring diagram for your sled and find the grounds take them appart clean them with some sandpaper and then try it, heck its alot cheaper than a lighting coil, just my 0.2

if its not a CAT, then it must be a dog!
Well we got the XC fixed. Seems teh voltage regulator went and shit the bed. Oh well, $37.00 later and everythings A-ok. It's a weird piece to since a typical regulator has a wire going in and one coming out, this is not that way. It has on going in, but nothing coming out. Must be a "pulse type" or something else like that. The wire leads to a circuit board with lots of resistor's and such on there.

Atleast we rode.... Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions!
