Insurance rates

Just got my sled insurance renewal in. My rates have gone up 39%! I was paying $41 per month (2 sleds), it jumped to $57! This for something I've ridden 3 times this year so far. On my daughter's sled it works out to $200 per year on a sled that I valued at $600, $300 deductable and no collision!

I haven't had any claims, but it did come with a nice letter explaining how they've had a large number of million dollar claims, rate increases across the board, recent tragic events, yadda yadda yadda.

Is this becoming an industry standard or am I just getting raped?

Mine hasn't gone up yet....hopefully it doesn't. You would think that with no snow this year that less people would be riding and less claims would be filed, which would make it go down....but insurance companies suck anyhow so who knows?

I pay $200/yr for full coverage on my 97 XLT SP. I go through State Farm, who insures my vehicals as well. They seem to treat me alright......so far.

mine was $450 for 2 sleds, a '91 skidoo safari, and a 2000 skidoo grand touring.
I get it through MASS, and they were really easy.
Mine is also through Mass. You might be in for a surprise when your renewal comes in.

I called around today to compare rates and am waiting for replies. I was told that a lot of the insurance companies are getting out of snowmobiles altogether and the remaining companies see that as an opportunity to raise their rates.

I think with the season we've had it's cost me about $3 a kilometer to ride my sled. Oh well, I can't get out of the sport or else I'd have nothing to complain about! lol
My buddy was with Mass and holy chit!....his jumped nearly double. They(Mass) stated that because there was so many claoms last year and they had to put it up. Well I say, The people who screw up......Ding them! No the other guy. There's gonna be another sled show at the International Center in Toronto in March. Mass has a booth in there and buddy's going with me to give them a piece of his mind. Should be good. Mark
jacqui, you pay $200/year to insure your daughters $600 sled? AND it has a $300 deductable? Am I missing something here or did you miss a 0 on the end of that $600??

Not sure i would ever insure a $600 sled personally. What kind is it out of curiosity.

If anything, I think everyone would want to insure at least liability. Even if you drive a $300 piece of crap and accidently T-bone a T-Cat, your covered. I wouldn't want to have to pay for someone elses $9000 sled!

Agreed, sled insurance is cheap, so why not have it. My 1993 indy storm was $24 a year, full coverage.

Yeah that makes sense. I was just thinking more for the stolen idea. Liability ins. is probably much more important out there than it is here though. I rarely even see other riders let alone come close to them. Except in the parking lot for example.

Yep, you have to have liability in order to ride on the trail system. My partner is a trail warden so I wouldn't get away with breaking the rules! lol

The liability is the bulk of the premium. I even reread the policy to make sure they didn't put on collision on the Yami by mistake.

But did I see IntendedAcceleration has $24 a YEAR? Holly Hannah. That's half my monthly payment for a '84 Enticer and a '99 583 Formula Dlx. How did you swing that?

Jacqui
What happend to the phrase "innocent until proven guilty"? why are we paying for others screw ups? I don't drink and ride, and smash up a tree. I don't do 100km/h on small trails. I'm careful, and should get rewarded for that.

right?

My 97 ZR580 efi costs $144US per year. full coverage . Its a rider to my auto policy. I'm shocked at what the Jacqui is paying. Is it the minimum coverage allowed by law?

I know. And I've been driving for (gulp) 24 yrs!

It's basic plpd stuff on the 84 Yamaha, full coverage on the formula dlx.

I spoke again to my house insurance guy today, he said that there are different rates for Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario. (southern being more expensive, of course!) He's looking into another company for me, but they are only accepting no accident drivers. I had a car accident 2 years ago. This company also won't insure Machsters or FIII's.

On another note, my Explorer Sport Trac insurance went up this year also. The agent said that it is a general increase across the board, not due to anything I have or haven't done.

It seems that the insurance companies are going to make it impossible to do anything but ride a bicycle!

Wow, I've also been driving for GULP 24 years. I dread to think of how much I've paid for insurance over the years!
