I think 10% is more for trail riding. As you want the suspension soft enough for a enjoyable ride. For a trail set-up, your suspension should bottom out on the real extreme nasty stuff, as you would not want your suspension set-up to handle those kind of hits, otherwise it would be too stiff for the other 90% of riding you did that day.
