Theres my sled, i'm a proud owner of a 1992 Polaris Indy 440 XCR. The pictures suck, so i will get some new ones scanned soon. My sled has Racing Exhaust Headers, DG twin pipes with glasspack style silencer. SOUNDS SWEET!!! Also it has 1 inch lugz with 144 picks, ski-skins and also head and taillight covers, and I just put a sweet looking white hood screen kit on it. My future plans are a low red windshield and K&N filters with snow chargers.

Sweet you got a 92 xcr too, how fast does yours go? And mods to it? i heard they are pretty rare machines. I got mine to 90mph yesterday, i think its all the 440 had, i need a triple, not a twin

On a pretty much dirt road with a dusting of snow on it I hit 76mph, but there was TONS of drag on the front skis from the dirt and rocks. Not to mention my hyfax got pretty warm ;-) After that run I imidiately turned off and drove over a small drift to cool everything down. But I think on hardpack I might hit 85. I havn't had a place to test so far though. The sled is bone stock though, except for the .91" lug track.

Also, I was thinking about low end power. What can I do to improve my low end? Top end it O.K. but, for the first 5 feet, it won't spin the track. After five feet it'll jump to life. Clutching? Pipes? Carb adjustment?

One last thing, I drove a friends 99 ZR500 (clutch kit, studs - it's absolutely nuts!), and it had plastic skis, and handled real nice. It turned alot better than mine.
Would ski-skins be worth their cost?

Nice 440's. For better hole shots and overall performance, i would try a clutch kit from one of the aftermarket companies. Ski skins are nice if you don't have any plans for plastic skis. They slide easier, keeps the snow from sticking to your metal ski, and look nice. They're worth it in my opinion.

Check your belt deflection on your sled. You should have plenty of low end power. I would guess either your belt is worn or the belt is not riding in the secondary clutch correctly. I believe that polaris man told me that the belt should ride 1-2 mm above the sheeves. There will be 3 bolts holding a cam in the center of your secondary clutch, loosen those 3 bolts and turn the cam until you get your desired belt placement.

Is that right polaris-man???

Clutch kit would help but I'm guessing your a bit rich on your idle jet, or air screw. When you hit it does it not respond right away, bog, sputter?? My 91 500 had the same prob. A carb syncro and jet tinkering fixed it.

it's a bog. Not a huge one, where you are thrown forward, but one that makes you impatient. I will try swaping my spare (read: brand new) belt with the one currently in it, and see what difference that makes. The carbs probably havn't been cleaned in 4+ years, cause the person I bought it from just ran it, then left it the way it was.

Glad to hear others have some 1992 XCR 440s mine is in realativly good condition a few miles and wear no upgrades but I dont know what to add. Before my throttle lever cracked I got up to 95 -100 on the lake. But I dont know the accuracy of the speeddometer. I was riding wth my mom and my friend and we went on to the lake I wanted to have something to bragg about so I waited till they were almost half way across the lake then I gunned it and flew past them like the were standing still. I havent heard about the rarety of these sleds but I do want to put some extras into it plz give me suggestions.
