New EPA regs...

2014 Views 33 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  MegaMan
well i have just read an article about the epa setting new regs for snowmobiles. Could this be the end of our 2-stroke engines??? I cant see myself riding a 4-stroke sled, it just wouldnt be the same. Also, who would wanna go out in the middle of winter and do an oil change on a sled???? anyone??? Not me thats for sure. Imagine trying to drain the oil and change a filter. But it sounds like we either gotta get the 2-strokes runnin really clean or we are going to end up with the 4's.
What do you guys/gals think?

I don't even want to get started on this subject. first it was the national parks and now it is everywere. What next do they want to make the sled electric. Wonder how many miles you could get on a charge and I wonder how many beers you can drink at the bar while you are waiting for it to recharge. I can't believe I even said that.
what im wondering is what happens to those of us that own 2-strokes, will we end up scrappin them cause the almighty epa has nothin better to do than pick on us, thats a bunch of BULLSH&T!!! all them bastards out west started bit*hn about the parks, now look, they are tring to demise our beloved sport, whats next, we can nolinger use 2-stroke lawn mowers to cut our lawns with,,,,,,them idiots are over-paid, and have too much time on their hands, or they have never ridden a sled to understand our passion for them. "hey mr. epa man, im gonna kick you in the nuts!" this is tres mal, (very bad)

"epa must kneel before the mighty god of polaris and accept his fate!!!!!"
I think what theyll do is stick in some sort of grandfather clause. that todays 2 strokes can still run. i believe the tree-huggers idea is to make the new sleds more tree friendly. what a joke uall are right they get paid way toooooooooo much and have too much time on thier hands.

Women leave you,
Bosses fire you,
Friends forget you,
SLEDDIN IS FOREVER!!!
i've read in a couple of different magazines that some of the technology that all of the big 4 OEMs are researching for 2strokes show that they can build engines that burn actually cleaner that the 4 strokes. i don't know if it is, but it better be, or the OEMs better do somethin about it, cuz i don't wanna be ridin a sled with 440 or 500 power when i'm used to 700 and 800s that weigh more and basically have no balls.

Let there be snow...
Manufacturers are already in action. As long as they make most sleds that meet the standards, they can have a few that don't. They are starting the 4-cycle snowmobile revolution. Polaris has put fuel injection on thier watercraft and it probably wont be long before you see it on snowmobiles. All of the snowmobiles out today won't be thrown away, there is nothing that ANYONE can do to stop us from riding them!

I think the manufacturers will find a way to tweak more out of the 4 strokes in time.

The new regs do not require that the 2 stroke be banned. Any sled made before the new regs become effective will not be subject to the new regs.

Each manufacturer is no doubt looking at 4 strokes. They can be very valuabe in reducing emissions and I think definitely have a place in the touring/cruising area. You could maybe put them in Kids sleds also... There is a lot of possibilites for 4 strokes.

A couple of years a ago no self respecting MX'er would be caught on a 4 stroke now (at least where I live) you have to get a on a waiting list to get a YZ426F, YZ250F, and you can't even find a new CR 450.

Of course I still wouldn't want a 4 stroke MXer either but if a alot of other people do then good for them.

Maybe the overall emmissions will be low enough that a few High Performance 2 strokers will still be sold
The EPA does have there points but they also have some problems. When Arctic Cat introduced them to their clean burning four stroke they still wanted to ban them in National Parks. I don't think they have a clue as to what they want. I think it is a good thing four guided tours like those in Yellowstone and other areas to use the four strokes. Those tourists probably couldn't use the power of the two stroke anyway and it makes for a much cleaner and quieter riding experience for them. This would then keep them on the good side of snowmobiling and let the rest of us keep our two strokes.
I do think fuel injection is the key to making the two stroke a much cleaner burning engine, this also means no dropping the bowls and having to clean and re jet. Colleges are already involved in making a cleaner burning snowmobile called the Clean Snowmobile Challenge. It is held in Jackson Hole, Wyoming every March ( for the past 3-4 years). They are definitely making progress so our sport can carry on into the future. CNN usually does a report on it in Spring so try to catch it or read up on it.

lol....the next sled i buy will probably be electric the way things are goin....ride around the yard w/ an extension cord draggin along. snowmobiles have been goin for how many years now? 30?35? on 2-strokes and now they start to cry around about it! changing oil on my sled would suck in the middle of winter...i mean, look at those 4-strokes out now! how much room do u actually have? not much. if they get em tweaked out say the have the power of the 2 strokes, good deal, but what would we do w/o that smell of fresh 2-stroke exhaust in the middle of winter?

Think Snow...hell...might as well think lots of snow!
I think the big thing is some people can't stand to see other people have fun,so they find excuses to screw things up for the rest of us.

Dont worry guys, the EPA wont take your sleds away. In the 70's people bitched about carburation going away, big cars dying, etc... and what happened??? Fuel injection became refined and efficient, horsepower went up, fuel economy went up, safety increase, all in all, cars got better.

The same thing has happened in outboard motors. If anyone is familiar with Mercury's Opti-max technology, you realize where the marine industy is headed. Mercury's top engines are optimax, and they use direct fuel and air injection/compression to boost to over 200 psi each stroke, and fire it instantly. The technology is powerful, efficient, and growing daily.

My point is that yes, regulations will increase, but you will not loose your sleds, you will just get better, more powerful, and more efficient ones.

Maybe, they'll design some hybrid snowmobiles just like today's automobiles are doing............LOL
Hybrid electric that uses a small gasoline engine to generate electricity.
