I have a 1988 488 indy trail and its in great shape and runs great but last year i was riding and all lights, dash llights AC power went out. messed around with things on the trail, started it back up and everything came back on. rode it 50+ miles with no other issues. did find some baked wires that looked like came from the handwarmers.

This year replaced baked wires and fired it up and all electrical worked. took it for a ride and ran great and everything worked great but everything went dark again in my driveway thank goodness on ride home. Cleaned up connections on voltage regulator and nothing. switched out regulator with a brand new one off of a 1999 touring classic. nothing,, found a baked wire again off of the ACC handwarmer switch. (not sure if it was baked enough not to work) found the ground bolt on the wire from the battery to the block was loose tightened that. still nothing.. Usually when something loose u get flickering etc. But both times i lost all electrical it went out immediately. I know electrical problems are tricky but when the entire system goes out its something major. I did check voltage on the double yellow wire connector going to the voltage regulator when it was running but didn't get any reading.. Reading other problems by others is a good smoking gun the stator? or a bad major wire connection or ground? can't be a simple single wire I would think.... HELP APPRECIATED!

I would start buy cleaning/replacing the ground strap from battery...then fuse block for lose/melted connectors. B.

Your issue is the handwarmer. Turn it off for a bit. Bet you won't have a problem. The alternator can't take a load that high without cutting out. Bur

Burnt wires is never good. Turn it off to test. Alternators can't take the huge draw man. A couple more times and you will be replacing charging components.
