ive been working on my 87 AC jag since late nov and today i got to ride it for the first time! if finally snowed!!!, but im having some problems, which there was no way to forsee until i rode it, problem 1, ok last week i burned out the headlight bulb then the taillight bulb too, so i put new ones in and it seemed ok, so i hadent thought much about it til, today while riding it burnt another headlight so i had one more replacement and put it in, it was ok for about 20 mins then burnt too! so im fresh out of bulbs and freshout of ideas why there burning out? could my regulator be bad? all the rest of the bulbs seem ok? im just stumped at this point, problem 2, i was expecting like 75 mph + on this sled, but at full throttle all it can muster is like 45-50 !!, now i just put new belt on, clutch feels good engages good just no topend, ive adjusted the track and you can pull it through by hand so i see no troubles there everything seems free, im thinking it may be jetted rich, would this affect my top speed, that much? a couple times on a warm restart it seemed to not wanna start and stumble"think it came close to fouling a plug, until i cleaned it out, so what gives im sure this sled is faster than 45 mph!, any ideas ? this is my first sled so im learning, but for the hour or so i got to ride it i already have had so much fun!

if its not a CAT, then it must be a dog!

Is that a 340 or a 440?

Trees don't make the greatest brakes...
I had a similar prablem with a cougar I had a few years ago. you need a new voltage regulator. you will find it just above the chain case. top speed issue sounds like a clutching to me but hard to say with out hearing the slead run
Voltage regulator guarenteed, like sled head said...if you are going through light bulbs it is your regulator without a doubt. As for your top speed make sure you go the right size belt for your machine length and width. If the belt is correct, check your Secondary (driven) pulley. Make sure it opens all the way and moves easily and smoothly by hand.

If you have a tach. what kind of RPM's are you getting at your top speed of 45mph? Is it bogging or is the motor really screaming?

its a 440 f/c , i was thinking it may be the regulator, also i disconected a thumb warmer because the wires were pretty bad but i dont think this has anything to do with burning bulbs?, also im not sure that the clutch or secondary drive is my top speed problem, i have no tach but id say it engages smooth at about 3000 or so and id estimate at full throttle 6000, it will do about 45 mph, its a bit doggy off the bottom, and wants to load up at idle, thats what makes me think carb, mind you this sled is a 87, but only has 1,000 miles, and im sure the carb has never been off, so id bet it has factory jetting, its a vm 34, with a 300 main, im sure a 280 or so might be better also could the carb just be dirty or clogged, at full throttle what kinda RPM's are you guys turnin? any ideas ? im pretty bummed because i put a bunch of time in on this sled and when it finally snows, i have these problems, grrrrrrr!

ok i blew off work today to ride, when it snows enough to ride here in pittsburgh, you better ride while you can, it gave me a bit more info about things that are wrong with my sled, im thinking regulator is why my headlight keeps burning out but if this is true why hasent my taillight and dash lights burnt also? also something strange i also noticed, while riding today my heated grips got really hot for about 5 mins "like really hot!" also while that was going on the dash lights also became really bright? voltage reguulator?, also as for my top speed problem my secondary clutch is able to move the sheave open and closed all the way so thats not it either, also on hot restart i have to hold the throttle 1/4 open and get it started then wait for it to clear out, about 25 seconds almost like it wants to foul but when it does clear out it seems fine but just doesnt go any faster than 45 mph? if anybody has any ideas please help, even for having these problems i still had a blast riding today!!!, better than work!

Clean that carb, and i'll bet you have all of your running issues solved. Make sure you clean the pilot jet, main jet, (power jet if applicable), inlet needle valve, and all the other goodies and passages inside that thing......the other thing that just popped into my head, is the fact that a partially plugged fuel filter may cause a lack of top end speed (but my bet is still on the carbs if they have never been cleaned). Also, i would stick with the stock jetting till you clean the carbs out, you may just have some stuff plugged causing all of your problems.
