A friend of ours has a '97 XLT. It has had a recoil problem from day one. It catches just fine when it's cold, but after it has been run it doesn't catch. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. She doesn't ride it much, maybe 1000 miles on it. Dealer gave them a brand new recoil, the whole cover and everything, we put it on and the same thing happens. I took it apart cleaned it all up, put some graphite spray on it, same thing. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks for any help!

Check the Cup bolted to the flywheel for signs of damage, if nothing there i still think its the recoil. I would try a different recoil again and see if it works.
