well got the sled back from the shop. was going to have them sync and go through the carbs and rejet. well guess i dont have to anymore. was told that the pto and mag cylendars are scored really bad and there was a lackof oil. i was told that the crank seals are ok and that it was my oil pump.

so i have a good lower end and a junk upper end. i dont want to stick $1,000 into the upper end. just wondr now what i can do with it now.

thinking that i should sell the lower end and just find another motor.

what do you think?

my sled is a 94 xlt with many mods. just need a motor now.

Pistons and gaskets are only 400-450. If your cyl are ok yet, hone them and slap it back together. 500 at most if you do it yourself. If you cant find a good used oil pump or don't wana fork out for new, just run pre mix. That way you know yore getting sufficient oil and never have to worry again.

yeah the guy at the shop said it was bad enuf to where you coulnt hone it down and polish it back up. so id need to bore it or just find a new setof jugs.

sad cause there was a lot of time and money stuck into this damn thing. all the porting and polishing. its already oversized like .040 so its time for a full upper end rebuild or drop another motor in it i think.

well got the sled back today and within a hour i had the motor pulled out and on a bench. looks to me that the shop saw some marks on the cylindar walls and just said the motor was shot. but i took it apart and itdoesnt lookas bad as they made it out to sound. i will take some pictures tomorrow and post and id like your opinion on the condition of the pistons. i think the shop guys were jst lazy and didnt want to do the carb tuning and syncronizing.

Nope they are just out to get your money....Take them off and go to your local machine shop. They will usually tell you if they can be cleaned up or not. Rule of thumb...if you drag your fingernail across and it catches the grooves it needs bored....If it doesn't you may be able to hone it but the wear could still be out of spec. My storm didn't really have any scoring but the piston to cylinder specs were way off. You are best to just take it to the machine shop....

So, what exactly do you have? Your title on the post says 1988 650, and then you talk about it being a 1994 XLT. Which is a monoblock 580?

correct 94 xlt with the 650 in it. yeah i think the guy was just lazy and didnt want to do the carb work like i asked him to do.

looking into the intake boot it does look like they are scored pretty good but i honed the cylendars slightly when i put it back together to take away some defects. the pto and center cylindar look to be fine but i know my mag side was a little gouged on the piston. the piston cracked a ring and i replaced the cylindar and just got new rings for it and i thought it would be fine. i think i will replace that piston though and rings again just to be on the safe side.

i will go take some pic's now and post in a few minutes.

here are the pics. i agree that the mag side piston needs to be replaced but do you think i can re use the cylindar? i think im going to go get a new set of rings for every piston and replace the mag side piston and put it back together. the cylendars have a slight hone to them but none of the marks in them you can feel. they are all generaly smooth with no gouges except under the intake openings of themag side. but its pretty smooth.
