I have a 80 scorpion whip 440 that is in excellent condition. It starts on the first pull and has crisp throttle response. the problem i'm having is when the sled is on the dolly it revs all the way up fast. When the engine is under a load(sitting in the yard) it takes off fast but does'nt wind out. Maybe 20-30mph.

A possibility to solving the problem is to rebuild your clutches. I had a 1975 whip that had the same problem. It would not reach a speed higher than 30 mph and would idle up on the stand. Worn out clutches tend to shift it at the wrong times. I rebuilt my clutches and tuned the carb whiched solved the porblem for me. Godd luck.
