Yeah .. Bombardier won't comment on HP specs for their snowmachines because of all the variables. I asked about my own machine and they said too many factors affect performance, so they just don't do it. I think it's kinda silly myself .. if they specify it for a standard set of parameters such as elevation, ambient air temp, and grade of fuel .. then it's all good )
The way I understand the rave is that it controls the amount of exhaust (I think) as your revs change to give optimal performance.
I take mine apart at the end of each season and give them a good cleaning up and replace the o-rings. Otherwise they tend to seize up and your sled won't be running at its top performance.
Variable Exhaust systems (RAVE, VES, APV) restrict the exhaust opening prior to the pipe to allow a higher back pressure to increase bottom end power. As you open the throttle further, the valve becomes less and less restrictive, thus opening the port up entirely at WOT. Variable exhaust systems do not add HP to the sled overall but, dramatically affect the bottom-mid range of the engine on it's way to WOT.
By the way telorvehc2000, there are never stupid questions around here!
I just recently found out that Bombardier's reverse systems actually stop and spin their rotax motors backwards to do it! I had no idea until I asked. Someone on the forum answered me but I can't remember who it was anymore. Thanks again to whomever that was.

I have always thought of RAVE engines like afterburner valve things on jets. They close down for afterburn and open up for full flight. When they close down you get more torque and speed.
Afterburn is fuel introduced after the combusion chamber and then ignited . The nozzles on the tail of the jet restrict (venturi) and accelerate the burning gasses to produce more thrust. Wouldn't quite be the same as a horsepower change.
Good analogy though.

skidoos new elctric reverse is very interesting. The engine slows down, and sounds like it is going to stall, then it just revs back up again. I think that it will pro long parts and is a big step in inovation.
