Usually the special just has rebuildable gas shocks and different graphics.

XCR SP motor is the "race" motor. Race is in quotes because it's suppose to be the performance motor. Bore is 68.5mm and Stroke is 60mm, 439cc. The non-SP is 432cc, 67.72mm bore with a 60mm stroke. The non-SP is a regular Indy 440, used in the 1992-1994 XCR chassis. The SP motor is used in the 1994-1996 XCR chassis and the 1997 XC 440. Then the Liberty 440 was started in model year 1997 XCR 440- it had VES and individual cylinders.

^^Yes and no. the 1999 XCR 440 (not the SP, the '99 XCR SP was edge chassis) uses the same Liberty VES motor as the 1997-1998 XCR, but in the Gen II chassis (therefore having the Gen II seat and tank: two piece combination with the knee pads). I didn't include these three sleds in my original post because that motor is an entirely different story in relation to the two XCR motors xcrtweaker123 is asking about.

However, there are some wedge body XCRs with the two piece seat/tank combo, where the seat has the knee pads. These aren't a Gen II gas tank nor a Gen II seat. They are called the racer seat for the wedge chassis. They are used on 1995-1998 XCR 440s (all wedges, both SP and non-SP) in addition to the 1997 XC 440.

So what is the better sled the 1996 xcr 440 or the 1997 xc 440? Do they have the same HP? They both have the xtra-10 but does one have a better shock package?

As I said in the other thread, both the sleds you're referring to have the same motor, so they have the same HP. both have Fox shocks front and rear. both have xtra10 front and rear- but they aren't the same. (adjustable resevoir shock on the 1997; trailing arms/spindles/radius rods are different between the two sleds as well as between any other sled with Xtra10)
