Strange but obvious revelation...I think

OK so here's the deal. I bought my XLT Special almost 3 weeks ago. Read my profile for the details. The point here is that the dealer sold me the sled as a 1995, the registration says 1995 but I now have reasons to believe its a 1996. This occured to me as I was putting on my ULTIMAX 2 belt when I noticed that the date 03/04/96 was embroidered on the clutch. Well, I thought the clutch was an aftermarket. No. Then I noticed that the carburetors are 38mm instead of the 34mm that the 95 is. And finally, it has the XTRA 12 Suspension on it, correct me if i am wrong but that suspension was new in 1996. Any suggestions would be of help.

Sounds like a 1996 to me. In 1995 no sleds had the XTRA suspensions. Except the XCR 440 SP had XTRA-10.

Isn't there a placard on the right-side of the tunnel? That's where all mine show the month/year and S/N.

Hey paul,

not sure but if yours is a SP model than i think they did have the XTRA-12..on this site if you look at the 1995 sleds and look at the XLT SP it has the XTRA-12...the regular XLT dosn't...the place card on your tunnel should tell the story...just my 2 cents hope you get it worked out

I have a 95 XLT SP and I have the Xtra-12 suspension. That is one difference between the specials and regular XLT's is that the Specials have the Xtra-12. If you are sitting on the sled, look by where your right foot sits and look at the manufacturers date. if it says 94, you have a 95. If it says 95, you have a 96 and so on. The clutch could be stock, but with a new bell housing, which is where the date is stamped. Also if you take an old clutch to get overhauled, some dealerships with stamp it. The carbs are a good point because the 95 specials have 34's, so you got me there. But if you buy the rubber mounting flanges, you can put 38's on there, which is a big hp increase.

Need some darn snow people.
