Correct me if I am wrong, but how many idler wheels should there be in the rear suspension, the very last set where you adjust the track tension? 4 right? Mine has 3, so I think an idler wheel fell off.

I cannot see any evidence of a wheel being there. Did Polaris design the 1997 INDY XLT 600 SP this way? Maybe when the new track was put on, the idler wheel was inadvertently left off.

And 1997 INDY 600 XLT owners out there? Look at you rear suspension where the track tensioner is and tell me how many idlers you have. xtra-12 suspension.

Thanks!

Your right, some Polaris came from the factory with 3 rear idlers and some 4. I'm not sure which ones though. Both my XCR's have 4. My indy 500 has 3.

Ok, if it did come with three, does anyone object to me putting a 4th on? I would have to cut the sleeve that sits in the middle so the extra idler fits.

Both my '94 XLTs only have 3 in the very rear wheel set. They are stock rear-ends and the spacers will not allow for the 4th unless you cut it. You could put a 4th on but I wouldn't really see the need. It might give you another season out of the bearings but IMHO, not worth the effort. You would be better off putting a second lower idler near the slide bend to eliminate the uneven wear there.

its never wrong or bad to add idler wheels. It may add weight, but the more you have, the longer life of the hyfax. I have a 1995 XLT SP with 3 idler wheels along the hyfax. My buddy rides a 97 XLT SP and he has the same setup as mine.

if it aint broken dont fix it... yeah... if there wasnt a space for one i wouldnt put one on unless u could make it evenly spaced. lets say u have 12 inches... 3 wheels so there is a 6 inch space between wheels but 4 wheels there would be a 4 inch space between each.. balance and such on the axis could be changed and mess it up..

Ok, I put my rear suspension back together after realizing that there should only be three wheels back there. I will just keep the idler I ordered for a spare. Thanks everyone for your help.

Just cuz some were wondering...

Seems the sleds that were more high-performance always had 4 idlers in back, most XTRA-10 RACE suspensions have 4 and XTRA-10 have 3, but on the newer ones, like my buddy's 2001 XC 500 SP, he's only got 3 in the back. Both my XCR 440's have 4, but it doesn't really matter. If it came with 3, then just leave it at 3.

There would be a spot missing if the wheel fell of, like they said.
