Viper Radar Results

Sorry it slipped my mind since the first thing my dad said when he walekd in the door was "I brought it home in a box again" in case you didn't know a chunk literally blew out of the motor. Took it in for them to replace the engine today. Not sure when we will get it back. Anyway they ran 1000'. At the end of the 1000' the Viper Speedo read 100MPH and the radar gun read 89MPH. He has seen the Speedo reach about 108-110 so we figured the top speed on a long run is 100MPH. My uncle ran his 2002 ZR 800(pipes, clutch, airbox) and it ran 96MPH in the same 100'. His speedo read 110 at the end. Those are the only two results I was told I will ask my dad and Uncle about the other sleds. Sorry again it just slipped my mind was too pissed at the sled.

i went to a radar run this weekend (1000'). a viper ran, but i didn't get the speeds. a couple '00 600 xc sp's really impressed me. both were stock, and both had picks. one ran a 98.7, the other ran a 96 or 97. that is pretty quick considering a new 900 zr clicked off like a 98. the zr did have the speedo pointing straight down, so we estimate his track was runnin about 130! he's done better, a couple weeks ago he pulled a 105 in a 1000'.

When in doubt- Throttle out!

I don't understand the speedo straight down thing. My uncle raced and beat a ZR 900. Course his 800 has more HP than a stock 900 :) He geared down and ripped across the lake and his speedo read out somwhere near 130.

i mean his track was spinning so fast the needle was pointing vertically straight down. in relation to the ground he was only moving about 98 or so.

oh I getcha. Not studded?
it had studs, 168 or 192, not sure. it also had lug studs, but those things are worthless.

he was spinning that bad with that many studs?
I highly doubt that that speedo was anywhere near accurate.

Sled speedo's are always off, so that track was not going 130. Especially with that may picks.

Well, as not to incriminate myself, I'll say I doubt that it was spinning that fast.

yeah speedos are always off like I said the viper read 100 when it was 89 adn the ZR read 110 when it was 96. All tracks spin(get it haha?), but was it losing traction? Could you REALLY tell it wasn't hooking up? I remember when the Viper was spinning the track at half track in a 500' drag race I could hear a loud whirring sound like some

well, i hadn't thought of it that way, but i'm sure there was a lot of error in the speedo, cuz had it been spinning 30 mph faster than he was going, i doubt he would have held it straight. it may have finally hooked up near the end, therefore explaining why the 600's beat him (picks). he had studs.

I believe speedo's are off about 12%! Thats what my step-dad told me!! He is really good with snowmobiles and he works a very important job at Polaris so I'm thinkin he must be right on that!!
But anyways that is crazy that he was spinning that fast with that many studs!! WOW!!
I don't think so I think he didn't get that the speedo was off and thought his track was just spinning taht fast. And every speedo is off a different amount. A buddy tested it once think the Polaris ones he tested were most accurate.
12% is the average, and thats on hard pack of course, not on ice! I thought yamaha was closer, maybe not since ya tested them!
I didn't test them a guy I knwo did. Calling him a friend wasn't a good idea he is the same person who tried to convince me his dad's 2002 XC 700 SP had 140HP stock. He isn;t a very trustworthy source. Like you said that is a good average.
LOL!! sounds a little bit over exagerant!! Oh well...we are thinkin bout the same thing anyways...basically speedos are pretty crappy...they should figure in that average!! oh well...
you would think they could make them more accurate but whatever they give you a good general idea.
They probably can make them accurate, but it would take too much effort.

As long as I have an idea of how fast I'm moving, I"m happy with that.

Remember at lower speeds the speedos are fairly accurate but at faster speeds the error rate is a rising percentage based on speed. The faster you go the higher the error %. Same as with cars only worse on sleds.

Time for my 2 cents. First of all, All that talk about picks. they only make a noticeable difference on very hard packed snow or ice. Ive been beaten out of the hole many times by pickless sleds if the snow wasnt like ice. I agree with the guy who said "they should be able to make the speedos more accurate. It also seems like they always read fast. Pumps up peoples egos . I think there using a little mind control of there own Intended.
