I own a 97 ZR580 EFI and I am pretty sure that it is not the fastest. However I did beat my buddy's 2000 MXZ 600 at top speed on lake Gogebic the other weekend and I outweigh him by about 50 pounds. (He smoked me off the line though).
If I am not mistaken every seld model size that Cat has made that was offered in both EFI and Carbed, the EFI was about 3-4 hp behind the carbed, but you race those sleds on a 30 degree plus day, the EFI should win, since it would be running more efficient.
This is all relevant to the most ambiguous word in this forum "FASTEST". Top end? Out of the Hole? Out of a Corner?
i have a 97 zr580 efi......and yah it may be fast for a engine around 600 but i dont think it is the fastest.......its been clocked around 90 at a 1/4 a mile so......i dont know if that means anyway.....
One more thing, I believe the 580 comes in around 96 or 97 hp, todays 600's are pushing 110+. So I would almost guarantee a butt whoop'n if I went against a newer 600,
Plus it is what they are set up for, like I said that 600 MXZ kicked my A$$ off the line and it took me 2 miles to overtake him. I personally like the lower end torque for take off more than top end, I need that more often.
I own a 2000 ZL 500, '98 ZR600, '96 Zr580 all are carb models. The 600 is way faster than the 580. I do have dual exhaust, porting, and 30 over on the 600 though. The 500 tops out about 98. The 580 is about the same. 580 is a lot nicer ride though.
