I got my viper out for the first time since i bought it this summer, I cleaned the carbs twice already. The viper will idle around 4000 rpms then go down to about 1800, once you give it gas it shoots up to 4000 and stays there for about 25 seconds and then go down to 1800 again. I let the motor get warm and it kept doing this. Sometimes it would go down to around 2400 rpms then shoot back up to 4000 rpms all by it self. Its like my motor is possessed. I check the trottle cable and its not sticking and the carb slide isnt sticking either. The clutch cable works perfectly also.
Any suggestions?? could it still be a jetting problem?? The viper is completely stock and has only 7 miles on it and has not been ran since 2003. I already put fresh gas in it.
Thanks, Ben

As far as i no it was, but then again i never let it warm up, i only made sure it ran before i but it away for a couple months

Thanks snowdad, so you think I should take the carbs apart again and clean them really good or let them soak overnight. What would cause the motor to just rev up like that by itself with out the choke being on and the throttle open?

on the intake side of the carbs there are three holes. bottom left has whats called the air jet. most commonly overlooked circuit on the carbs. little tiny bastage thats hard to see and remove. you need a good tight fitting regular screwdriver to get it out. while your at it, may as well go through the carbs again. if you fully disassembled them on the first cleaning, including removing the fuel screws, did the o-rings under the screws stay in the hole or fall out? this will cause a similar condition. fuel screws should be 1 7/8 turns out from being lightly seated. your problem is without a doubt carb related, and dont run it for any length of time or you will cause a lean burndown.

Thanks again snowdad, I will defiantly take your advice and go through the carbs again tomorrow. I have never had this kinda problem before, sounds like you have. Thanks
after nearly 30 years playing with snowmobiles, i have seen alot. there is alot more to carb cleaning then most people take the time to do. once you know the secrets, it becomes second nature. glad to help, let me know if you need anymore help.

I have an 03 Viper I took it in this year and had the carbs cleaned. Yamaha dealership charged me 250. But yes put it away running perfect last year and started it this year with about the same idel problems you have. I had high idel and running real lean. For a moment I thought I blew a crank seal! I usually will take my machines in if we cant figure out a problem after a couple of weekends and a couple cases of beer.

Well thanks again snowdad, Voopermark I will not have to take it in I fixed the problem, I took the carbs apart and there was a little bit of metal shavings in the middle air fuel mixture screw, I assume from the factory the threads look fine. I set them at 1 and 7/8 just like you said and took out and blew out the air jet. Then, I cleaned the carbs again. I put them back in the sled and it started fine. I had to adjust the idle slightly lower (200 rpms). After that I let the sled warm up and it did great. Thanks for your help and good luck this winter
