Please help before I lose what hair I have left! I have an 89 polaris indy 500. I can get it to start, Idle (rough) but no power and the choke has to be on at least half or engine stalls. Every time I give it throttle it will stall. Sometimes back fire. I've changed the plugs (several times), taken the carbs off and cleaned them, verified I'm getting fuel (by gravity) to the carbs... Any thoughts? or suggestions?

fuel pump ,or try spraying some ether around it could be sucking air ,also seen sticking needles and seats etc

I have to agree with the first guy. check all your fuel lines to see if your lines are cracked.

Also if you cleaned your carbs, did you mess with any of the fuel/air settings? That could explain your troubles. Im having issues getting the right air/fuel mixture after i cleaned the carbs.

sounds like its running rich. i think you need to double check you needle and seat

yeah take those carbs apart and make sure there is no debris around the needle and seats. and id take apart that fuel pump and inspect all the fuel lines as well. mine acted like that and i rebuilt the carbs and teh fuel pump and she ran like a champ

also if you still cant come up with anything to make it work then put a fuel filter inbetween the fuel pump and the carbs. i heard this sometimes will fix these issues.

I actually had the same problem with my indy 500. Once I realized what happend it was too late. I actually lost a couple nuts that held on the jugs. Then when I was out I actually cracked the jugs in 3 places but the pistons are fine. so I now have a parts sled sitting here b/c I picked up another polaris for the same price the jugs were.

Since it will only run with the choke, it is definentally running lean, backfiring is also a sign of running lean, a lean condition like this is usually caused by an airleak. Don't run it any more then you have to, to find the problem or you could damage the pistons and cylinders. It could be a cracked or loose carb boot,(most likely) A leaking crank seal,(also very likely on a sled of this age) or if it was rebuilt recently the cylinder bolts could be loose and it could suck in air.

Get it running and idling the best you can, and like stormrider said, spray these areas liberally with starting fluid (ether) one at a time. If there is an air leak the engine will most likely rev up, in some cases it will instantly die if it is a very bad leak (witch itdoes sound like)

It could also be the mag side crank seal, witch you cant spray with ether, oilusually leaks past them if they are leaking, you could pop the flywheel off and take a look if you cant find an airleak anywhere else.

If you find no airleaks then it sounds like your pilot jets arepretty clogged.
