As some of you recall, I got my 1990 Indy 500 for free. Because it was free, and clearly run hard much of it life, I didn't do much besides new suspension parts and a good tune up. I didn't expect it to last much longer. I didn't even clean the carbs. Well, she started acting up, not idling, bogging. So I yanked the carbs and completely tore them down. I found various things, most importantly plugged pilot jets. So I cleaned it all up, and installed them today. Man what a ripper now. Smooth idle, bogging gone, and noticeably all around more power. I bet I can get her up to 115 on the lake now. OK, not even close to that. [
] But it sure runs better. So the moral of the story: clean them carbs. I see a lot of people asking questions on here that often point to a carb issue. If your machine has high miles, or has been sitting for quite some time, maybe it is time to clean the carbs up a bit.
