Here is the deal. Got a guy who has a '96 (or '97 he doesn't know), 800 Storm. 1600 miles and asking $1600 dollars. He said it simply has too much power for him. It is in excellent condition, it was owned by a guy who worked on the 'Slope, so it never was ridden much.
Another fellow has a '99 XCR 800 with 5000 miles and $2600. Immaculate condition, owned by a fellow who only rode on groomed trails and was anal about keeping everything in perfect condition.
Problem is the '99 is in New York, will cost $1750 to get it here. The '96/'97 is in Willow. I'll be able to pick it up in Anchorage and have it shipped for $500 to Bethel.
'96/'97 round slide carbs, 7.5 inch front travel (standard IFS), 200 Watt alternater. Low miles. $1600 + 500 = $2100 total
'99 flat side racks, VES, 10 inch travel, CRC steering, Xtra-10 suspension, 280 Watt alternater. AND a much more refined motor. High miles, but owner is adamant, it is excellent condition. $2600 + $1750 = $4350 - $3500 = $850 total (I will sell my Ultra SPX).
Point here is I will eventually have HTG do a 1200cc kit to this animal and make it a real frightening machine.
Should I go for the more refined package in the '99, or should I go for cheap and see what I can do to increase front suspension travel and better the steering.
