The 96-98 where about the same except for a few small differences.
The ROTAX RAVE engine is a great engine. Ski-doo has been running this motor for many yrs since the 80's and didn't stop production tell about 98 when they went to the 500/700 line up with the new 99 chassi. This motor is strong and can take a beating, its also one of two motors that that FAA lets you use in ultra light aircraft. Polaris is the other. So if they trust this thing in a small plane, Id trust it on the trail.
The rear skid is ok, nothing really fancy. However in 96-98 it was pretty mcuh awesome, tell newer technology was used on the newer skid's. Its a lil rough on some of the smaller bumps, it doesn't transfer between the front shock and rear shock very well. You can put an ETT kit for about 90.00 that bolts on in minutes and fixes this and makes it a great suspension.
The sleds a bit tippy, the chassi was known to be tippy. I can lean very easy and get the ski on one side to come of the ground and ride the sled on one ski or tip it on its slide. I've tipped the sled over in the field two times just goofing around. So its not so stable, but after riding it you learn what to do and no to do when riding. I think it corners great and rides the trails pretty good.
speed is a good 80+ Im not sure on top speed. My old 93 Plus X could hit a good 85 on the speedo and I never push it much farther. I haven't really pushed my mxz over 80 but I hope to get out to the lake and open it up.
