We are almost into a new decade, but I was thinking about this last night and wondering what everyone thinks was the BEST sled from the 90s. Best balance of power, suspension, and reliability.

Ive never owned a doo but it seems like the 99 MXZ 670 HO would be a contender. I belive they were like 127 HP stock with a nice suspension, and the 670s were very reliable.

The 670 was a great engine but they did not make 127 hp. The 99 mxzx 670 would probably be my vote for all around.

I think to be fair everyone should post a particular model from each manufacturer.
Well I wanted to get peopls opinion on the one best sled from the 90s. We just have to not be brand biased

I thought the regular 670 was around 118 and the 99 670 HO was 127??

The 99 670 H.O. made about 140 horse. Ski doo admits that the 800 backslid in performance and amsnow tested them on the land and see dyno. Twin 44 mikunis and dpm. I have to say that this was probably ski-doos best sled of the 90's.

I would say the XC 700 for polaris about the same year. They ran and sold very well and from all I have heard they had every bit as much motor as the 670 rotax. Never rode one but I have heard very good things.

I would suggest for cat the ZR 580. When it was intorduced it was the benchmark that the other manufacturers were aiming for. AWS front suspension, and a stron motor made cat the target for 600 twins for a long time.

As far as yamaha goes I am drawing a blank. Really just can remember anything all that outstanding. The V-max 4 maybe?

I'm not an expert on the other brands , those are just the models I really remember standing out as class leaders. My humble onpinion.

The SRX is the sled Yamaha guys will never forget from the 90's. Those sleds still have a big following. They don't have much for suspension stock but they were always meant to be a lake racer/smooth trail sled and they are very good at that. It's insane how hard those things pull on the top end for a 700cc sled.

Polaris: I'd have to say the '98 XC 700, that sled had a big hand in starting the big block twin era that we're in now.

Ski-Doo: I'd have to say the 670 as well.

Arctic Cat: ZR 580

Agreed. About the 580 and indy's though, I wasn't looking for sleds that set a standard or were the best in 96 or whatever.

Just the SINGLE best all around performing sled of the 90s

you had less sled problems in the 90's than in the 2000's, almost any sled from the 90s was a pull and go sled, the 2003 and later models seemed to have lots of little problems.

I think a lot of that is because of all the new technology that is ever changing and not quite perfected yet.

As far as sales, XLTs rocked the sledding world more than any other sled in the 90s. Poo sold a bazillion of them and everyone else scurried to catch up. The best were the 93-94 models for reliability IMO.

I agree- it's amazing how many of those old XLT's you still see out there.

If suspension and handling are any part of the equation at all, the the best sled from the '90s is either a Polaris or a Cat. It would be hard to beat the mid-'90s XLTs and late-'90s XCs

Yeah, these little 500s pack a punch. But i would say probably any of the Gen 2 Polaris sleds. I think 99 was the first year. We have 2, and we love them. But i have also only rode 1 other sled from the 90s then our 99 700 and my sled, which would be our XLT.

I can't agree with you JD. The old mags from the 90's compare the XLT's and ZRTs in a few articles. The ZRT takes it in power and more suspension.

Thats what made me fall in love with it in the 90's. I read those, said I had to have it, bought it, and still drive it haha.

my vote would be the 98 XC 700 or the 98 ZR's.

For Polaris, I'd have to say for performance and reliability would have to be the carbed Indy 500s. Just no stopping those old Fuji twins.

For Doo, I'm with many others with the '99 MXZ 670.

Yami..Mountain Max!

Cat: I'm partial to my ZR, which was a great cat. I'd have to say the '96-'97 case-reed ZR440s without powervalves or any of the Cat triples.

No doubt a ZRT beats an XLT for power by a considerable margin. It's ridiculous to even compare the two. An XLT has a 90 hp trail engine and a ZRT 600 is probably 20 hp more. But, I think we'll have to agree to disagree on which was a better sled, overall.

But, take your own advice and throw those rags in the garbage. We know they are biased and please each manufacturer just enough to get their advertising.

I think you would agree, as would anybody being truly honest, that Cat and Polaris were far ahead of the other manufacturers in the suspension and handling department throughout the '90s.
