98 xc 700... polaris knew whats up when they built that sled!
and for the 700 vs 670 debate, I know my 98 would smoke a 670 summit.

Yep thats a good choice too. Didn't the 99 make more power stock?

Definatly the 98 ZR's. For power and speed definatly a v max-4

I liked my 98 ZR 600 a lot but not sure if it was the best sled of the decade

No, the 98 with 220's cylinders made more hp then the late 98's and 99's. had more agressive porting and different CDI.

Alright, im gonna give a whack at this.

Arctic Cat: 97' Arctic Cat Z series sled. Smoothest sled I've ridden to this day was a 97' Z 440. If I had the money I'd get another one no doubt

Polaris: Any year Polaris Indy 500, and I think that the XCR 600's were pretty nice.

Ski-Doo: Tossup between the 97' MXZ 583, and the 98 MXZ 670. My friend had a formula Z 670, and on a flat lake it would eat my 700

Yamaha: 99' Yamaha Vmax 600, smooth, comfortable, and Yamaha reliable ( possibly the most reliable brand i've ever laid my hands on )

Polaris-I am surprised that nobody said a thing about the Ultra. That engine had so much potential. Really a tossup though as the XCR 800 and XLT engines were amazing.

Arctic Cat-The 580's were excellent engines, but my top choice goes to the ZRT 600.

Ski Doo-Who the hell rides these things anyway? JK Any of the Mach Z triples were good sleds.

Yamaha-Definatly the SRX 700

Overall, you cannot go wrong with a XLT. Dead reliable, plenty of power, and the sleds all handled and rode very well. I wish they would come out with a newer XLT.

Im not really biased, but Im pretty sure I read "98 XC 700" more than any other specifically mentioned sled.

ahem.....gentlemen (term used loosely),...... my vote

(there are 220 jugs in there too btw) Factory rear leaves a little to be desired in the bumps, but transfer was great. Overall handling is awesome. Its also a wedge so it gets like 10,000,000 style points.

I always thought cat had a better rear susp in the late 90s. The ZRs handle really good too, great trail sleds with good power.

As previously mentioned MANY times before me, the 98 XC 700's, they are my vote, and even the 600's werent to bad either for that year. It was definately a good sled for Polaris to let the wedge style design die with, IMO the best sled made by Polaris.
I wish sled makers would come out with retro sleds much like the car makers do.

A close second would be the MXZ's of the mid-late 90's, i remeber reading about them in the magazines, they were very desirable, i guess i just never caught on to it.

Do they have to be consumer sleds??

motodeficient, you should have known better than to post up a topic like this, people always run wild! LOL.. In my mind there is no one machine that clearly owns all catagories you listed. As far as I'm concerned the Std Indy group of sleds is the "winner" so to speak of this era. Sales don't lie and the people liked their Indy's. They offered a great range of engines and options that had great value and that kept them competitive thru the 90's. Not to say others were crap, Arctic was way ahead with wishbone front ends and later on with rear skids as well. Doo had some excellent mills and some great chassis (F& S) that in some respects were better than Indy's. Yamaha was a little lack-luster in the early 90's but came out with the most reliable and efficient triples on the market at the end of the decade. My fave's for the 90's:

- 98 Polaris XCR 440
- 94 Arctic Cat Wildcat 700 ( who said Polaris had the first BIG twin? [:D])
- 93 Yamaha Exciter II SX 570
- 91 Mach 1 X 617
a guy in the group picked up an old wildcat. stock twin pipes and big carbs, not much suspension but it lays the smack down on the newer polaris twins.

I posted up the sleds that really gave me a boner from that era of the 90's and yes the 700 Wildcat was awesome for it's time(this coming from a non-Cat fan!). I remember a customer at the old shop I worked at let me ride his when it was about 2 years old, so I was about 14. I pegged that thing and all I could do was hang on! It sounded great stock too! Each sled I posted was unique and special for its time I think.

Looks like the XC 700 has alot of votes!
