I have a 1994 VMax 500 with grooves on the primary clutch closest towards the center of the sheaves. Can I have the sheaves cut or do I have to replace them? It won't shift properly and I was told I needed to have that fixed.

How much to get them cut? How much for new sheaves?

Thanks ahead of time for the advice.

Dave

This is usually caused by too much belt deflection. Belt rides up sheave about 3/4 " before engaging. If you machine surface sheave will be very thin and possibly crack or warp also if you take of say .100" this will also increase belt deflection because belt is now further away from sheaves. You would have to reshim your spider to bring sheaves closer together. Best to try and find a good used primary clutch.

What type of machine shop would do that? I have some old Polaris primary clutches that could use that, but none of the machine shops I use have heard of the procedure.

If the sheaves are that worn it's probably a high mileage sled and the rest of the primary is worn out too. The sheaves are aren't cheap and you need special tools to install them. If I were you I'd watch ebay for a primary clutch or post for one at http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/

If you want a price on the new parts you can look them up here.

Any shop should be able to do it if they have a CNC or Lathe in the shop. Anyways, it might still be cheaper just to wait for a clutch to pop up on e-bay, they get $80-150 for clutches, but for the time of a good machinist you may be talking $30-40 an hour.

Be careful about buying a clutch off eBay. I bought 2 off eBay and one off this site that were totally worn out and needed rebuilding. Avg price was $80 for the clutches, and between $80-150 to rebuild them, so they weren't that good a deal. You might want to buy from a local dealer (factory or aftermarket) so at least you can see it and have some sort of guarantee on the part.

THERE IS one thing ya havent been told yet, IF...ya find a good mechenist with a lath, it will take about 25.min to do both sheeves, heres the "catch 22" once ya do that the clutch WILL BE OUT OF BALANCE, thats the catch 22 ya gotta have it re-balanced,
re-surface 2 sheeves=40.00
re-balance the clutch= 75.00
movable sheeve bushing=22.00
cam arm(weight)bushings=18.00 set of 3) ya gonna want to replace (AT A MINIUM)the movable sheev bushing and weight bushings, a NEW 108EXP comet my cost is only 258.00 NEW FROM MFG WITH WARRENTEE. with a comet you can get all the replacement parts and rebuild parts ALOT-LOT cheaper then oem.

Agreed - either buy a used one in great shape (should be around $100 or less) or go with a new unit like the Comet. Either way, I don't think you can justify machining your current clutch.
