I just bought my wife a 99 MXZ 600. It runs great, but idles a little too slow (1000 rpm or less). At its current idle, it wants to die and I would like to turn up the idle to 1500 rpm or so. I cannot find the idle adjustment on this sled. I am not very good with snowmobile engines, but I think a simple idle adjustment is within my scope of capabilities. Any help would be appreciated as to where I can find the idle adjustment. Thanks!
 
First, make sure the carbs are clean, and the pilot jets are not blocked.
The idle speed screws are the horizontal screws. The screws pointed down are the mixture screws. Mix screws should be 1.5- 2 turns out, I forget. After adjusting the idle screws make sure they are open the same amount. You can use a sync tool or even a drill bit. I think the initial setting to get it close is around .070". If you have to open it alot more than that, then the pilot jet is too big.
Is the sled stock? I assume the plugs are good.
I can't find the exact specs, but this should get it close. Maybe someone has them.

Thanks. I did check with my local dealer this afternoon and basically got the same advice. I did get the idle set to 1500 rpm and it is running great. Now my wifes sled is ready for winter.

I can't help you with that one. Best advice would be to take it to a dealer to fix the idle for you. They can get the carbs cleaned and make sure that you are ready to go for winter. Last thing you want to have happen is to go out for your first ride and blow the engine.

You want both carbs to be flowing the same amount of air. Use a sync tool for this. The screws may be off a little. The air flow amount is what is important.
Even more important is airflow when the throttle is opened. Both carbs should be opening at the same time. Again use the sync tool, run eng at around 3000 rpm. Having someone hold the throttle open makes this easier.
If the carbs have different amounts of airflow, The engine will not run at peak performance. It may run rough, or feel off somewhat. It depends on the amount of the difference.
Everyone that has carbs should have this tool. It is extremely easy to do. And you know your carbs are equal.
